Packing & unpacking, defined

Packing and unpacking from The Flat Rate Movers is a scoped packing service at three levels — full, partial and fragile-only — packed room by room, labeled by room and contents, with furniture fully covered in padded blankets and sealed with stretch wrap, then unpacked and placed at the destination.

Three levels — full, partial, fragile-only

Full packing — the crew packs nearly every item in the home: kitchen, closets, decor, garage. Chosen most for large households, hard closing deadlines, and long-distance moves, where boxes ride for days and must be packed to travel, not just to carry. Partial packing — you pack what you are comfortable packing, and the crew packs the rooms or item classes you assign; the kitchen is the most common assignment, and partial packing is also the rescue level when a self-pack runs out of time. Fragile-only packing — just the breakables and high-value pieces: dishes and glassware, artwork and mirrors, TVs, lamps, china and crystal, antiques — packed with care and marked FRAGILE, escalating to white-glove handling or a custom-built crate when a box is not enough.

The service serves residential, commercial, senior and estate clients: the closing-driven mover on a hard deadline, the downsizing senior or estate executor, the renovation mover emptying and restoring rooms in order, the time-poor household, and the business mover whose packing is one phase of an office move.

How a packing job runs

1. Scope up front — the packing level is scoped with you, room by room — kitchen, bedrooms, living and dining rooms, home office, bathrooms, garage, basement — and quoted inside the one flat rate in writing before move day.

2. Room-by-room pack — rooms packed and labeled in sequence; every box is labeled with its room and contents, because unpacking is guesswork without it and load order follows room order.

3. Wrap standard — furniture fully covered in blue padded blankets, sealed with clear stretch wrap, staged cleanly in the room — nothing exposed, nothing rubbing. High-value or fragile pieces get white-glove handling or a custom crate, and export pieces are packed to ISPM 15 when the journey crosses a border.

4. Unpacking and placement — at destination we unpack and place, so rooms come back together in order.

Two boundaries are stated plainly on the depth pages: a standalone unpacking-only service and a pack-for-storage scope are not published and not claimed, and debris removal after unpacking is not claimed. Packing only, without a move attached, is available — it is one of the move types on our quote form.

Where the work happens

Packing runs from both branches — Winchester, The Flat Rate Movers, 116 W Piccadilly St Suite 11, for the city and the northern Shenandoah Valley, and Martinsburg, Flat Rate Movers Martinsburg WV, 736 Williamsport Pike Suite 2, for Berkeley County and the Eastern Panhandle. The scope conversation is the same at both: the rooms, the fragile pieces, and the date produce one flat rate in writing. Branch areas above are the published Google Business Profile service areas for each branch. Moorefield 26836 is served by both branches. The two branches are distinct: names, hours and service areas are never blended.

Questions, answered

Do movers pack for you?

Yes — movers can pack for you, at three levels: full packing (the whole home), partial packing (the rooms or items you choose), and fragile-only packing (just the breakables). Whichever level you choose is scoped room by room and quoted inside the one flat rate in writing before move day — never hourly. Packing can also be booked on its own, without a move attached: packing only is one of the move types on our quote form.

What does full packing include?

A trained crew packs nearly every item in the home: kitchen, closets, decor, garage. Furniture is protected separately — our published wrap standard is furniture fully covered in padded moving blankets and sealed with clear stretch wrap. Full packing is chosen most for large households, hard closing deadlines, and long-distance moves, where boxes ride for days and must be packed to travel, not just to carry.

What is partial packing?

The middle level: you pack what you are comfortable packing — clothing, books, linens — and the crew packs the rooms or item classes you assign. The most common assignment is the kitchen, because it is the slowest room in the house to pack well. Partial packing is also the rescue level — if you started packing yourself and ran out of time, a crew can be scoped to finish exactly where you stopped.

What is fragile-only packing?

Fragile-only packing covers the items where skill matters most: dishes and glassware, artwork and mirrors, TVs, lamps, china and crystal, antiques. They are packed with care and marked FRAGILE. Fragile and high-value pieces escalate past the box when a box is not enough: a large mirror, a marble top, or an irreplaceable antique goes to white-glove handling or a custom-built crate. Name these pieces when the job is scoped — not on move day.

Is packing included in a moving quote, or is it an add-on?

With most movers, packing is an add-on you must ask for, and many companies bill it by the hour. Our model is different and published: the packing level is scoped with the rest of the job — the items, the distance, the manpower, the equipment — and quoted inside the one flat rate in writing before move day. There is no hourly packing clock.

What will movers not pack?

Even on a full pack, some things a crew cannot take: hazardous materials — paint, solvents, propane, fuel — and perishables are the standard exclusions, and federal guidance is blunt that hazardous materials must never be hidden in household goods boxes. Plants travel badly and are usually excluded too. Irreplaceables — jewelry, documents, medication, cash — should travel with you, whoever packs the box.

Does it matter who packs the box?

Yes. Under the federal rules for interstate moves, a mover's liability can be reduced by your own acts — the FMCSA consumer booklet gives the example of improper packing of containers you pack yourself. If a box you packed arrives with the carton intact but the contents broken, fault is much harder to establish. The reading is simple: the more breakable and valuable the item, the stronger the case for having the crew pack it.

How is packing priced?

We do not publish a packing price list, because honest packing cost depends on what is actually being packed — rooms, fragile pieces, crates. Full, partial and fragile-only packing are scoped to your rooms and items, then fixed inside the one flat rate in writing. What changes the scope: number of rooms, fragile and high-value pieces, custom crates, ISPM 15 export packing, and unpacking at destination.

What does unpacking include?

Unpacking and placement at destination: boxes unpacked and items placed, so rooms come back together in order. Unpacking is part of the same service — boxes opened at the destination and contents set out, so the new home is usable the day you arrive.
